What a Pool Closing Includes
A closing protects the pool, plumbing, and equipment from freezing over the winter. The crew removes ladders, rails, and fittings, adjusts the water level, blows out and plugs the lines, winterizes the equipment, adds winter chemicals, and installs the cover. The water should be clear and balanced before the crew arrives; that part is the pool owner’s job.
Choosing a Winter Cover
Many inground pools are closed with a safety cover anchored into the deck. Covers built to the ASTM F1346-91 standard must hold at least 485 pounds. Mesh covers let rain and snowmelt drain through and are lighter to handle; solid covers block sunlight, which helps keep the water balanced over the winter.
